About the Opportunity: Reporting to the Director, Innovation, the Manager, Innovation is responsible for leading innovation project activities on behalf of Research and Innovation. The Manager will provide dynamic and pro-active leadership and direction to effectively identify, develop and manage strategic and collaborative opportunities with partners from the private, public and research sectors. The successful candidate will navigate, deliver, and resolve issues among all stakeholder groups at both practical and strategic levels. The Manager is also responsible for providing leadership on major project initiatives, managing NSH’s innovation portfolio, applying appropriate policies regarding research agreements and man-aging innovation team operations including staff and financial reports both internally and with ap-propriate funding agencies. The position will lead a team of employees and co-op students to identify and implement innovative initiatives by establishing and working with key partnerships in the private sector as well as research and innovation partners in the local, regional and global ecosystem as well as internal stakeholders. Manager, Innovation will represent units within research and innovation to these key ecosystem partners. The Manager will be able to identify opportunities for improvements and work closely with a dedicated group of professionals to develop strategy to achieve goals. The position requires a combination of an understanding of clinical environment, process improvement and technology opportunities and business acumen. The Manager must be able to build external relationships with industry, clinicians and other people associated with NS Health, and government, particularly those elements of government responsible for economic development and act as a representative for the senior leaders as required and requested. It also requires the ability to build partnerships between clinicians, research groups and clinical ser-vice units, and between NSH and its other academic partners. The Manager will provide advice and support for the activities of the Directors and Senior Directors of Research and Innovation. Under the direction of senior leadership, the Manager ensures continuous improvement to advance a vision of excellence within his/her areas of responsibility and is accountable for the development, maintenance and monitoring of quality programs, and compliance with relevant legislation, standards and accreditation requirements. The Manager facilitates and champions a learning and re-search environment that aligns with Nova Scotia Health, and works closely with education institutions, government and other partners. Accountabilites: Engagement of Stakeholders Identifies and cultivates opportunities for all aspects of the Health Innovation Hub and the broader Research and Innovation portfolios Leads the negotiation of term sheets, confidentiality agreements, options, licenses, leases, inter-institutional agreements, memoranda of understanding, material transfer agreements and other elements necessary in the technology commercialization process Fosters relationships with internal clinicians, innovators and researchers Lead the preparation of business cases for large scale acquisitions, negotiations with industry partners, contracting and procurement. Lead the identification of solutions to health care problems including scanning internal sites and clinicians for opportunities, identifying industry partners, collaborating with partners on co-development opportunities, secure funding Lead implementation of clinical innovations such as robotics, data strategy, virtual care solutions Collaborating with many stakeholders, leading the team through project management processes Business Operations Prepares, negotiates, and manages project budgets and contracts including invoicing for ser-vices provided and ensures payments are submitted in a timely fashion. Manages subcontracts and consultancies with other national/international academic institutions; liaises as appropriate with Industry and Foundation granting agencies. Serves as liaison and/or participates in regulatory audits, inspections, site visits, and/or internal reviews. Develops and recommends corrective action to address deficiencies identified Cultivate institutional, government and industry partnerships that lead to financial synergies and/or investment in research and innovation at NSH. Liaise with Legal Services and other leaders to ensure processes, procedures, policies and legal agreements meet organizational requirements and objectives. Innovation Development Assist clinical groups to develop short-, medium-, and long-term strategies and business plans for innovation and securing resources. Facilitate partnerships between clinical groups and other academic institutions and external partners. Provide match-making services between clinical groups and potential partners and funders. Develop and implement partnerships between research groups and clinical units to further expand research and innovation at NSH Facilitate and develop research and innovation activities within clinical services units. Department Leadership Interact with internal departments to capture synergies, particularly with clinical services. Ensure strategic research and innovation directions are within the context of the strategic plan of NSH. Mentor and be a consistent role model for research and innovation group members, project managers and team members. Provide support and advice for the Director, Innovation, Senior Director, Innovation, and VP Research, Innovation and Discovery in the context of their executive. Collaborate and work closely with senior leaders to establish a culture of collaboration and positive communication for the Innovation team. Create, lead and motivate a high-performance team promoting quality work, high levels of customer service in a cost-effective manner. Promote creation of a healthy, safe, diverse and respectful workplace by championing and practicing sound human resources management by attracting, recruiting and retaining high caliber talent, establishing and monitoring performance objectives, providing ongoing learning and development, promoting teamwork. Lead, engage, coach and develop the Research and Innovation team by ensuring best practices and evidence-based program planning is followed to meet service delivery and standards. Support and utilize strategies and tools to engage staff and encourage their contributions to the development of a healthy and productive workplace. Support the development and activities related to the promotion and commitment to diversity and employee engagement. Support a leadership development approach that supports leaders to grow and enables emerging leaders to follow a career path that leverages their skills. Demonstrate respect for diversity and social inclusion through cultural competence. Communication and Stakeholder Relations Work with academic partners to develop and resource a communications strategy to establish national prominence for Research and Innovation, NSH as the largest hospital-based re-search centre in Atlantic Canada and for the regional academic health network. Manage government relations with respect to research and innovation, in the context of the broader government relations in NSH. Manage relations with philanthropic organizations such as the QEII Foundation and Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation, with respect to research and innovation. Facilitate research and innovation collaboration between NSH and other health science institutions such as universities, other health authorities and hospitals. Maintain relations with government bodies and industry stakeholders and partners. About You: We would love to hear from you if you have the following: Completion of Business Degree is required, Master’s degree is preferred A minimum of seven years’ experience in administration A minimum of five years’ experience in business operations, management Experience in the academic and health care environment is essential Experience in government relations specific to research, innovation and health Experience in managing multi-stakeholder initiatives and projects and with stakeholder liaison and management Experience in the local health sciences research environment is a definite asset Business planning and budget management experience Experience in project management principles and implementation Please ensure your resume is up to date and includes all relevant education, experience, training, and certifications.
