The Department of Public Works supports Nova Scotia’s 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways and 4,100 bridges. We are responsible for managing major capital construction projects, snow and ice control services, along with road maintenance and repair services. We’re recruiting for an Engineering and Survey Technician to support the Northern District. About Our Opportunity Reporting to the District Bridge Engineer, the Engineering and Survey Technician conducts a broad range of surveying and engineering related duties in conjunction with the administration, maintenance and construction of highways and bridges. Primary Accountabilities The Engineering & Survey Technician conducts survey duties including vertical and horizontal highway alignment, design, collection, completion and presentation of data collected in the field, preparation of plans and determining quantities of materials used. In addition, this position will aid a Bridge Inspector in performing regular Inspections of structures across the District. May also assist in contract supervision and the day-to-day supervision of District Bridge Crews while Co-ordinating logistics such as scheduling, determining quantities, acquiring materials, arranging traffic control and other services required for the bridge crews' daily operations while ensuring compliance with the Department’s safety program and that work completed meets contract specifications. Qualifications and Experience Graduation from a two year survey or civil technology program. Must be proficient in mathematics and drafting. A working knowledge of the various aspects of bridge and highway construction design standards, contract specifications, the Land Surveyors Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act and familiarity working in a union environment would be considered an asset. The position demands a motivated self-starter who can work with a minimum of supervision and is computer literate with computer software packages designed for use in a surveying or engineering environment. You consistently maintain a professional and courteous disposition and hold a high standard for client and customer service. In this position, you will interact with the public, supervise a crew and monitor the work of contract personnel. As such, your ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing, develop strong relationships with clients, and think and act proactively is essential to your success. We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks. You will have some time spent in an office environment, but most your time will be spent outside during all seasons and various weather conditions on heavily travelled roads or in rough, isolated areas of construction sites. Additional Information A monthly car allowance of is available for Public Works Engineering Survey Technicians. The current rate for the 2024-2025 fiscal year is $1,220.85/month, or $14,650.20/year . Rates for the allowance are adjusted up or down annually based on the year over year percentage change in the Nova Scotia Private Transportation Index as calculated by Statistics Canada. This position may require you to work extended hours / overtime and will involve significant travel throughout the province, using your personally owned vehicle.
