The successful candidate must be from the following designated group in order to be considered and must self-identify as African Descent. Reporting to Senior Director, Public Health and working closely with diversity and social inclusion leads and others across the organization, the incumbent provides leadership and guidance within NSHA to achieve the goal of culturally safe and appropriate health services for people of African Descent and African Nova Scotian communities, as well as supporting a culturally safe, diverse and inclusive workplace. The Consultant advises senior leadership on matters related to people of African descent and affecting African Nova Scotian communities, as well as advancing recommendations emerging from community engagement to address health disparities. The Consultant will work closely with program/portfolio colleagues to plan, develop, implement and evaluate policies and strategies to enhance access to and the quality of health services provided to individuals, families, communities of African descent to improve health outcomes and reduce inequities. They will also work with People Services to ensure workplace policies and strategies support enhanced representation of people of African Descent, and to support respectful and safe working environments. The Consultant plays an active role of representation, consultation and liaison with Nova Scotia’s African Canadian communities and organizations serving people of African descent. They will build a network of provincial connections within the health sector and the communities, as well as with government, academic, education, research and business and community partners to incorporate promising practices in the development of resources and structures necessary to promote diversity in health and employment within NSHA. The Consultant will support diversity and social inclusion activities with NSHA and collaborate with other portfolios that support under-represented and/or diverse communities and work to address health inequities. This position is restricted to individuals from the following employment equity groups; persons of African descent. All applicants must self-identify. About You We would love to hear from you if you have the following: • Undergraduate degree in Public Administration, Health Services Administration, Business Administration or relevant areas of study. • Five years of related experience or a Master’s degree plus three years’ experience • Significant knowledge of the health system required. • Extensive knowledge of, and connection to the population of African Descent across Nova Scotia. • Experience as a health professional is an asset. • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, cultural and structural competence, and initiatives dedicated to the welfare of people of African descent in Nova Scotia. • Demonstrated experience in project management, coordination, facilitation and qualitative research. • Strong writing skills with demonstrated competency writing synthesized literature reviews, policy analysis, briefing notes and reports. • Demonstrated planning, organization and time management skills. Ability to deal with competing priorities. • Demonstrated critical thinking with demonstrated ability to assess and anticipate future needs, potential problems, directions and development for all aspects of strategic, financial, and human resource management. • Strong communications skills and ability to develop and sustain coalitions, alliances, and partnerships with the members of the health care sector and external agencies. Community development experiences an asset. • Ability to communicate and build coalitions effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders using a variety of methods. • Innovative systems thinking with an understanding of working with priority communities. • Demonstrated high standards of ethics, integrity, respect, accountability and upholding the public interest, and ability to use them effectively in decision-making. • Leadership skills consisting of building a vision, team building, conflict resolution, goal setting, coaching, mentoring, delegation, change-leadership. • Must be able to deal with periods of increased workload and stress as well as cope with a variety of personalities as part of a high performance team. • The incumbent must have the ability to work under pressure, competing priorities and within a tight deadline. • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred Please ensure your resume is up to date and includes all relevant education, experience, training, and certifications.
