Adopt Bilbo a Tricolor (Tan/Brown & Black & White) Hound (Unknown Type) / Mixed

Location:
Mississauga, ON
Description:

Bilbo / M / 9Y / 47lbs / Hound Cross / Good with People / Should be the Only Dog / Good with Cats / Not Tested with Kids / From Mexico / Fostered in Toronto Meet Bilbo! Bilbo was abandoned at our partner rescue in Mexico. He was malnourished and had patches of mange, but was nursed back to health by the wonderful shelter staff. When he was ready he flew to Canada for a better chance of finding his forever home! Bilbo is described as mellow, loving, and grateful. This loyal boy loves to contemplate life while lounging with you on the couch or his bed. Don’t mistake his low energy for apathy! He is excitable and will whine for attention. Bilbo loves a good play session , hour long hikes and even strolls on the beach! A true foodie, he “dances” as he watches his meals being prepared. He truly is a very special guy. With people he knows, Bilbo is friendly and outgoing. He will seek out play and of course, treats. Around new people, he can sometimes be more nervous, depending on how people approach him. His new family will need to ensure when he is meeting new people that he is properly introduced to ensure he is set up for success. Bilbo has not been tested with kids. Based on his personality, he would likely do well in a home with respectful children well-versed in dog etiquette. While he is slow to warm up, his interactions with dogs has been more negative or neutral. As he is an older gentleman, he does not enjoy other dogs being too in his face and would appreciate a home with other pets who understand this. We think he would be happiest in a home that is dog-free so he can spend his days soaking in all his adoptive families love and attention. He currently lives with a cat in his foster home. After an adjustment period, they are getting along nicely-even napping together! A true hound-he is a keen sniffer and keeps his nose to the ground, completely focused on tracking scents. He occasionally freezes when caught off guard by cars going by and loud noises. He also enjoys digging for scents in the soil and would love to be adopted by someone who would pursue scent training with him. As he is living out his golden years, he does not need strenuous physical activity. He would do well with a few light 30-minute walks per day. He does currently pull on his leash so needs a strong handler and training for this. Bilbo is learning the basics of obedience. He is very food-motivated and eager to learn; this is going well. If he's too excited or fixated on something (like a scent) it can be hard to re-direct him even with food. He is completely potty trained and has not had many accidents. His new family may want to prepare for the odd accident as he transitions into a new home. When his fosters leave the home Bilbo is crated and has been left alone for up to eight hours. He settles quickly as he’s been given a nice walk with some sniffing beforehand. He currently sleeps on a bed or will settle for the couch at night to sleep with the cat. His fosters have noticed some signs of separation anxiety when he fears that you are leaving without him. What can we say, he just loves his humans! He is working on this and is slowly making progress. Given his age and his gentle nature, Bilbo would enjoy a peaceful household with a calm and relaxed atmosphere. Whether that be a house or an apartment, Bilbo’s home should be close to parks and other green areas. He would appreciate a family who is home more often than not. Bilbo has Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca known as dry eye with vascular keratitis; both these conditions require lifelong eye medication; the costs are as follows:Eye Meds: Cyclosporin 2% drops (bottle lasts a month - approx cost is $83)Eye Lube Gel (tube lasts 2-3 weeks - approx cost is $27) He has had a few instances of snapping while receiving his daily eye drops. His fosters have been using positive reinforcement which is working and has minimized his reactive behaviour. Bilbo does wear a muzzle during this time and it seems to be helping. He will require ongoing support here. If you're interested in adopting, please apply at https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/adoption-info#adoption-form Bilbo's adoption fee is $250.
