This position is part of the Subdivision and Environmental Services team in the Engineering Department. This position reports directly to the Senior Environmental Specialist and employment responsibilities will include a variety of assignments including performing or assisting with the following: Water conservation initiatives, including enforcement of bylaws; Implementation of erosion and sediment control regulations and guidelines; Invasive species control; Solid waste reduction; Implementation of the Municipality's Climate Action and Energy Plan and tracking municipal emissions data; Designing and creating engagement materials on a variety of environmental topics for First Nations, the general public and students at local schools; Respond to public inquiries for departmental questions (e.g. drinking water restrictions, recycling, riparian area violations, oil spills, invasive species, surface water protection, dumping, and erosion and sediment control); Instrument maintenance and sample collection for surface water monitoring programs on local water bodies; Maintaining datasets for surface water monitoring programs, summarizing data for reports; Compliance reviews of subdivision and development plans with municipal bylaws and regulations; and Support for construction and maintenance of stormwater management infrastructure. Deployment to other duties may be required from time to time. Required Skills, Qualifications and Abilities: Engineering or Environmental Technology Diploma or equivalent, together with a minimum of three (3) years of post-diploma relevant experience in local government. Familiarity with environmental best practices for municipal developments. Demonstrable skills with the use of traditional media and web-based platforms for communicating technical information. Demonstrable skills with the use of spreadsheet, word processing, database programs and computer file organization. Demonstrable ability to organize data sets and keep accurate records and notes. Demonstrable ability to use mapping and GIS programs in an engineering environment. Demonstrable ability to prepare technical reports for technical experts and the public. Demonstrable organizational ability and good interpersonal communications skills. Independence of judgment and capability of working with minimal supervision. Possession and maintenance of a valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's License; a satisfactory current driver's abstract will be required. The position may be physically demanding and may include accessing difficult terrain and use of watercraft. Candidate must be able to successfully perform all duties associated with the position. A medical certificate attesting to suitability for this position may be required. This is a unionized position (CUPE Local 358) and the collective agreement may be viewed on our website. Candidates being considered will be required to undergo a comprehensive evaluation of skills, qualifications, and abilities. The successful candidate will be required to undergo a police information check.
