Detroit Action is looking for fellows to join our first ever Black Organizing Summer School (BOSS) organizing fellowship program. BOSS fellows will learn about community organizing and base building, support organizing campaigns and participate in Detroit Action events throughout the summer. The fellows are responsible for organizing their community into Detroit Action membership and volunteer spaces for key issue campaigns and activities. They will use a wide variety of membership engagement skills, focused on leadership development and other tactics geared towards building a thriving base of member-leaders and activists. We are looking for young people (or those young at heart) who want to make change in their community. Whether you’re in school, working, volunteering, or just looking for a new opportunity, this is for you! Black Organizing Summer School is an immersive 8-week summer school designed to ignite and nurture the leadership potential of Black organizers in Detroit. At the heart of BOSS is a commitment to fostering a deep understanding of community organizing, movement building, and leadership development, tailored specifically for the Black community in Detroit. Through a hands-on, experiential learning approach, participants will dive into the rich history of Black organizing, explore current social justice issues, and develop practical skills in community mobilization, strategic planning, and effective communication. BOSS is more than a program—it’s a transformative journey aimed at empowering the next generation of Black leaders to effect meaningful change in their communities. Essential Duties Attend weekly training sessions classes (may not miss more than 2 class throughout the fellowship) Work with fellowship manager to create and manage a personal work plan that engages Detroiters on Worker Justice, Transformative Justice (Criminal Legal System) and Democracy (Voting Rights and Education) campaigns. Attend and help plan organizational events as needed Conduct voter registration and voter mobilization shifts in the field with your team Support organizational wide issue advocacy work in your community Every fellow will support and engage in each of these areas throughout the fellowship under the supervision of their local field manager. Weekly Classes : Each week on Wednesdays from 4:30-6:30 p.m. there will be a required training session. These sessions will cover a variety of aspects of organizing, and fellows will be able to engage with the presenters and apply their learning to their work in the fellowship. Immersive JEDI Sessions : Fellows will have an assigned Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) reading to complete each week, and then will connect with another fellow to discuss the readings. There are also three required DEIJ sessions that will be led by Detroit Action staff members. Community Building : Each fellow will be responsible for engaging with current volunteers and bringing new volunteers into FMT’s organizing work throughout the fellowship. This could look like helping out a new volunteer on their first voter registration shift, helping out a new volunteer on their first canvassing shift or meeting with a potential volunteer to join an organizing committee. Event Support : Detroit Action will hold several events throughout the summer and fellows will support in the planning, recruitment, and running of these events. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Experience in fieldwork (voter registration, canvassing or community building) is not required but the drive and motivation to learn is a must have! Who Should Apply? BOSS is designed for emerging and established Black organizers, activists, community leaders, and anyone passionate about the principles of equity, justice, and community empowerment in Detroit. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES : Creativity & Innovation : You’re flexible, adaptable, and willing to try new things. You’re down to wear a costume, not afraid to talk to strangers, can conduct fieldwork for up to 8 hours at a time, and are committed to finding ways to make new connections. Flexibility & Adaptability: You are able to shift quickly to meet the needs of the ever-changing political world, and work to implement the changes. You have a history of going with the flow and being able to adapt quickly to change. Keen analytical skills: You are a person that is quick on your feet and able to take in a lot of information, while noticing subtleties that could be crucial to the success of a project. We are looking for people with the ability o to make timely decisions even in the face of complexity or ambiguity. Strong Leadership skills: Leadership is not just about managing teams but also inspiring and motivating others while setting a positive example.You are a visionary thinker, with the ability to mediate disputes and facilitate solutions that satisfy all parties involved. Excellent Communication Skills: Can you tell your story or explain your thoughts and ideas clearly? We are looking for people who can truly hear and understand the point of view of others. ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: Fellows are supervised by the Volunteer Coordinator and will be peer-supported by the canvassing staff and other organizing staff. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The position is a part-time position that works up to 20 hours per week. This position is based in an office building in Detroit, MI. The position occasionally requires weekend work (Saturday and Sunday). The position requires work outside up to 75% of the time and will be exposed to the elements and inclement weather. PREFERRED CANDIDATE: Must be able to submit a resume or cover letter Candidates must have reliable transportation to and from the office as well as to the community Passion for and experience in social justice and/or political causes Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with diverse peers, stakeholders and communities Collaborative work ethic and ability to work effectively across lines of difference Ability to work autonomously as part of an innovative team Ability to write and speak clearly and persuasively, including speaking in small and large group settings. Alignment with Detroit Action’s Mission and Theory of Change Must be willing to work flexible hours that will include time outside of the traditional work day including evenings and weekends. Organized and time management Experience working in communities of color highly preferred SALARY: The salary will be determined according to a salary scale which takes into account years’ experience, location, job category, and other factors, but is expected to be $20 per hour.
