Shadow, Domestic Shorthair For Adoption In Toronto, Ontario

Location:
Toronto, ON
Description:

Shadow is a very handsome, black-furred boy (wearing a surprise pair of white speedo underwear ;). Unfortunately, he was abandoned by his original owners and was living as a stray for many years until he was recently rescued. Likely from having lived on his own for so long, Shadow currently keeps to himself a great deal of the time and you'll find him asleep in the top perch of his cat tree most of the time, but his playful side really comes out when you bring out a wand toy to play with. He's also very curious about every noise, and will come to investigate any activity in the house. He's a thoughtful little gentleman, and will sit with his front paws crossed in front him and watch as you do your thing. Shadow accepts petting (especially scratches around his head) but he currently has a tendency to snap at you if you miss his cues for when he's had enough. He will do best with a guardian who has previously had cats and understands how a cat maintains their personal boundaries and doesn't see this as a dealbreaker. He should not be adopted by a family with young kids. That said though, Shadow also really enjoys interacting with his people. When he wants attention, he'll rub against your leg and will let you know when it's his meal time with a series of loud meows. As mentioned, he loves playing with his favourite wand toys. He also really loves his new floppy toy rubbed with catnip and will carry it with him or sit with it between his paws and lick it. After we play he will come and lie down beside me, so I think eventually when he settles down and he builds his trust he'll be quite affectionate with an owner who respects him. While he currently doesn't play with the other cats in the house, he doesn't mind them being around either. He and the other cats hiss at each other (like cats do), but they will just slink past each other without any attempts to bite or lash out. In fact, I think he would like to play with the other cats, but being a bigger boy, he just needs to learn how to be a bit more gentle with others. As an older cat, Shadow has arthritis in his back hips and has started Solensia injections once per month to alleviate pain. For his well-being and quality of life, a potential adopter will have to be able to continue this treatment for him. A home with minimal stairs would be the best environment for him. Likely because of his arthritis reducing his activity, he is also slightly overweight and is currently on a prescription metabolic food to help him lose the weight to relieve the pain on his joints caused by his weight gain. As a senior cat, Shadow requires yearly bloodwork to monitor his health. His next test will be due in August 2024. Shadow also has some mild tartar and may require dental surgery in 2024-2025. Like all ACR cats, Shadow has been treated for fleas and parasites. Shadow is negative for FIV and FeLV.Check out Shadow playing and cuddling by following these links:https://vimeo.com/861832918?share=copyhttps://vimeo.com/861833092?share=copyhttps://vimeo.com/861832998?share=copyAdoption process If you are thinking of adopting a cat or kitten, please contact us. Annex Cat Rescue has matched over 1000 cats and kittens with good adoptive homes since our group started! Annex Cat Rescue cats live in real homes with our foster volunteers -- not in cages! This way, the cats live in normal homes and receive good food and medical care -- and lots of personal attention. We get to know each cat, so we can help you find the best cat for you. It's kind of like a kitty match-making service! All of our cats are vaccinated, have been de-wormed, and are spayed or neutered once they reach six months of age. We are always available if you have questions or concerns as your new cat is adjusting to your home. Here is our adoption process: Please leave a voice mail or email. One of our Adoption Team volunteers will contact you to find out more about the kind of kitty you are looking for. We will suggest which of our cats might be the best match for you, and put you in touch with a few foster homes for you to contact. You can go and visit the cat in the foster home and see if you think it's a match. If you fall in love on the spot (so easy with kitties!) we ask you to go home and think about it overnight, since it's an important decision for you and for the kitty. Then, if it's a match, you can bring your cat carrier (and the adoption fee -- which is modest and does not cover all of our expenses) then take your kitty home! We ask all adopters to sign our adoption agreement, which just sets out some basics so we all understand our roles, with the kitty's best interests first and foremost! A day or two later, we'll call you to make sure all is well and provide any suggestions that might be helpful, if needed. The Annex Cat Rescue's motto is "Cat Adoption with a Difference." If the adoption does not work out (a rare occurrence, in part due to our excellent "match-making"!), whatever the reason, the cat will always be welcomed back to our organization. We want the best for our kitties! Please contact us today!Shelter locationThe Annex Cat Rescue is a grassroots community organization. We are 100% non-paid volunteer-run. Our organization attempts to make a real difference for the homeless, stray and abandoned cats in this city through direct intervention and education. Every day, many people turn to us for help when Toronto Animal Services cannot. ACR does *not* run an animal shelter. All of our cats/kittens live in volunteer foster homes across Toronto where they are allowed to blossom and grow in a "home" environment (rather than in cages), and where they receive individual attention and love. While this prevents possible behavioural problems associated with caging animals, this also allows us to get to know each animal intimately and thus we can make excellent matches with adopters. Potential adopters are required to make appointments to view the animals in their respective homes. Our organization is "no kill". This means that cats in our care remain in foster homes are not euthanized (except for dire humane reasons). City shelters do not have such a policy.
