Riggs is a handsome, three year old Boxer mix who came to us as an unclaimed stray and weighs about 60 pounds. Riggs is a youthful, strong dog, with classic Boxer lines and intelligence. Riggs is ready to find his forever home and we are keen to help him find it. Riggs is well trained and obedient. He enjoys the company of the people he trusts and enjoys an active lifestyle. Riggs takes some time to warm up to strangers and would really prefer not to meet many new people. He has been socialized with and enjoys the company of other well-behaved dogs. In the past, Riggs has been very fearful of men, and we have invested in training to help reduce this fear. We will not place Riggs in a home with children or cats as we do not know how he would be with them. We think he will make a great companion for a single adult or couple, and he would prefer a quiet home, with structure, routine and few visitors.Riggs is special for two reasons. He can be anxious around new people or in new settings. In the past, when in situations that make him anxious, he has demonstrated barking and lunging behaviour. He would need a home setting that would minimize these stressful situations, especially at the outset. Riggs is also very strong so his new owners will need to have the physical strength to control him should he become fearful. Ideally, Riggs would be placed with a single adult or couple in a quiet home. Riggs definitely needs an experienced dog owner who is patient and can established a structured environment for him and who can recognize when he is anxious. In addition, he would thrive in a home with a fully fenced yard in a quiet neighbourhood. We don't think he would be successful in an apartment or condo, because of the increased likelihood that he would run into lots of people. Riggs would thrive with owners who are committed to an active lifestyle - regular walks and hikes on quiet trails and with opportunities for mental stimulation. He also needs owners committed to continuing the positive reinforcement training that has benefited him to-date.Riggs is living in a training facility in the Peterborough area. Potential adopters should expect to visit him two or three times at this facility before taking him home and his current trainer will assist with training knowledge transfer.If you're interested in adopting him please fill in our online adoption application.
